An Grá agus an Ghruaim le Seosamh Mac Grianna
A new edition of the classic book by Seosamh Mac Grianna, edited by Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde.
A new edition of the acclaimed short story collection by Seosamh Mac Grianna. This edition is based on the first edition first published in 1929. An Grá agus an Ghruaim is Seosamh Mac Grianna’s second collection of short stories. In this edition the spelling and orthography is brought up to date with a precedence given to the natural speech and rythm of the author. The story “An Bhean Lán de Stuaim” that had been omitted from previous editions, is restored here, and “Bíonn Súil le Muir ach Ní Bhíonn Súil le hUaigh”, the story that had been put in its place, is retained in this edition.
This is how the writer Donn Piat described the book in his review for the newspaper Fáinne an Lae in March 1930:
“Creach Choinn Uí Dhomhnaill” is the best story in the book – or in modern Irish. It’s a great book, I recommend it and I recommend the man who wrote it.”
And here is how it was described in the magazine An tUltach in March 1930:
“If anyone could find me a story more artistic, more accomplished or more quintessentially Irish than “Creach Choinn Uí Dhomhnaill“, then I would be eternally grateful.”
Many reviews and theses have been written about this work since it’s first publication and it stands as one of the great works of the Irish language, written by an ambitious young writer who was still in his twenties.
