This abstract painting is part of a series I was inspired to paint after seeing a tweet! (You can see the tweet in the photos). You can read the full story behind this painting below. The series is of graffiti-style abstract paintings of Georgian doors in Dublin lives that have passed through them over the years. It would make a great Christmas art gift for a husband or boyfriend. This painting is part of a series of framed, original, graffiti-style abstract paintings of Dublin Georgian doors. I was inspired to paint them after seeing a tweet by a painting and decorating company! (You can see the tweet in the photos). After seeing these tweets, I started thinking about all the Georgian doors in Dublin and the thousands of lives that have passed through the doors over so many years.
I was thinking about their lives and loves, joy and heartbreak, challenges and achievements. I wondered whether people chose their favourite colours when they painted these doors, whether the chosen colour was from some leftover paint, and whether there were ever any disagreements about what colours to use between husbands and wives!
As a result I started looking up streets of Dublin on Google Streetview to find doors I liked. Then I looked up the addresses in the Irish 1901 and 1911 census to get a snapshot of one family who had lived behind each of these doors and created these cheerful, colourful abstract paintings. I’ve called this series “Layers of Lives”.
This painting is about Patrick Horan and his three sons, William, Patrick and Michael.
This painting is of the door of a house that was home to Patrick, a widower who worked as a coachman. He lived with his three young adult sons who worked as a postman, carpet fitter and soldier. I painted little bits of information in different spots on this painting about the people who lived in this house, almost like graffiti or the little time capsule notes that people sometimes carve in the wood in the houses in which they are living.
Patrick was a widower who had been married for 25 years. He and his deceased wife had had five children but three were still alive. He was 62 at the time of the 1911 census and was working as a coachman.
In the census, his three adult sons were in the house on the night. William (31) is recorded as being a “Carpet Lair”. I’m assuming it should be layer, rather than lair. After all, a lair means a den, so this made me chuckle as I imagined him laying carpets for villains in their secret lairs!
Patrick (27) was a postman. Working as a postman and living in the city centre, I wondered whether he had to go to the GPO every day to start work. Was he still working as a postman during the 1916 Easter Rising? Was he working that day? We know from historical accounts that not all members of the public were supportive of the Rising but that public sentiment changed when the leaders were shot by the British in Kilmainham. So what were his thoughts and feelings after the Easter Rising and seeing the destruction of the GPO? Did he support it or not? And did his daily work life change afterwards due to the destruction of the GPO?
Finally, Michael Horan (25) was a soldier. I don’t know what kind of soldier he was or whether he remained a soldier as the 1926 census hasn’t been released and it won’t be until 2026. It’s estimated that 200,000 Irish soldiers fought in WW1 and 49,400 of them died. So I did wonder whether Michael fought or whether he had survived if he did.
What is curious to me about this census is that both William and Patrick are marked as married, but they’re marked on the census that they were with Patrick on the night. Maybe they were there to celebrate a special occasion, or maybe Patrick marked them on his form, even though there weren’t there on the night and were with their own families.
On the census, the address is marked as 28.2 Leeson Street, which means that their front door may not be the one visible in the picture above, but the basement door under the front door. Today, the house is an office for a law firm, and the basement is used as a boxing club.
